From Husayn’s tumblog, one of his favorite songs of the year from the Sacred Harp tradition…
This tops my list of “Songs That Bring Me to Tears Every Time…This Year”. It’s from the Sacred Harp tradition of songs, dating from the mid-19th century New England. It was made popular again with the film Cold Mountain but for some reason completely missed me when that movie came out. Something about the purity and simplicity of spirituals like this gets me every time. Even though I don’t share this exact religious tradition or theology, I find it so touching.
“I’m going home,
My Savior smiles
and bids me come.
And I don’t care to stay here long!
Sweet angels beckon me away,
To sing God’s praise in endless day,
And I don’t care to stay here long!”
